With all due respect to our commander-in-chief, mindful of the enormous burdens he carries, the American soldier has done far more to establish world peace than Nobel Prize winner Barack Obama. Our military men and women don't need the validation of some intellectually esoteric committee in Scandinavia -- the love and support of their fellow countrymen will do nicely. But neither should formal recognition of their service be confined to cursory holidays and observances.

Syndicated columnist Leonard Pitts inadvertently illustrated what is wrong with race relations in America today. Detailing -- surprise -- the lingering racism of Republicans and readers hostile to defense of Professor Henry Gates, he cited Republican accusations ("on the flimsiest of grounds") that Sonia Sotomayor herself had made racist comments. He mentioned the "racially tinged" rhetoric of the McCain/Palin campaign in its final days.
